The Apprentice Nurse

Today has revealed plans to create 1000 new apprenticeships within the nursing sector. Students will now be able to earn whilst learning to become a qualified nurse.

Jeremy Hunt, Health Secretary, revealed plans today to introduce the first degree-level nurse apprenticeships. Individuals will no longer have to spend thousands of pounds a year to attend university.

Commenting on the plans announced today, Professor Lisa Bayliss-Pratt, director of nursing at Health Education England said: “The development of the nursing degree apprenticeship standard is a key element of developing flexible routes into nursing for our health and care workforce. We want to open up more opportunities for people to enter the nursing profession.”

The new apprenticeship scheme will be up and and running by September 2017. Student nurses will not only be able to train to work within the NHS, but also within Community and Social Care settings.

Many see the proposed plans as a step in the right direction, whilst others view the it as more of an issue. What are your thoughts? Is it a good move for the Government to go ahead with the plans to train apprentice nurses?
