April: Stress Awareness Month

This event has been held every April since 1992. Health care professionals and health promotion experts join forces across the country to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for stress.

Everybody feels stressed from time to time, and for some individuals, stress is a real problem. Stress can lead to a number of major health problems ranging from anxiety to serious heart attacks. It is easy to see why it is so important to keep stress levels down.

The Social Care industry is one area where stress levels are high, for both patient and carer. It is both mentally and physically challenging, as carers are leant upon so heavily to ensure their patient is safe and well looked after even after the working day has finished.

It is important for carers to take a break occasionally, and not become overworked and over-stressed because carers are responsible for more than just themselves.

Focusing on the here and now can assist in providing an escape from what was or what could have been, by just enjoying the moment. All carers should make time for themselves outside work, this will help to control emotions and wellbeing. Some carers work very long hours, which is why it is important to take the designated time for a break, and not go overboard with overtime.

Communication is key. It can be difficult to understand how deep a person’s stress goes, but by speaking to your manager, a friend or a colleague, tension can be released. Carers, talk to an individual who understands your work load and the pressure you are faced with this will pave the way for more effective communication and a possible solution.

Managers feel stress too but they can influence how they and their team feel. Appreciation goes a long way, and it is important to let carers know they are appreciated not only by their patients, but by their management too. One to ones can be effective for both parties, removing negative thoughts and producing a positive plan of action for the future.

Take a look at your working environment, is there something which can change to reduce the amount of stress upon you and your colleagues? Maybe more teamwork is required, increased activities with patients, or even a regular staff meeting to find out how one another is getting along.

Stress affects everyone, but how we deal with it is most important. Don’t suffer, speak.

The Apprentice Nurse

Today has revealed plans to create 1000 new apprenticeships within the nursing sector. Students will now be able to earn whilst learning to become a qualified nurse.

Jeremy Hunt, Health Secretary, revealed plans today to introduce the first degree-level nurse apprenticeships. Individuals will no longer have to spend thousands of pounds a year to attend university.

Commenting on the plans announced today, Professor Lisa Bayliss-Pratt, director of nursing at Health Education England said: “The development of the nursing degree apprenticeship standard is a key element of developing flexible routes into nursing for our health and care workforce. We want to open up more opportunities for people to enter the nursing profession.”

The new apprenticeship scheme will be up and and running by September 2017. Student nurses will not only be able to train to work within the NHS, but also within Community and Social Care settings.

Many see the proposed plans as a step in the right direction, whilst others view the it as more of an issue. What are your thoughts? Is it a good move for the Government to go ahead with the plans to train apprentice nurses?

Stop the Pressure Ulcer Day

November 17th brings the annual Stop the Pressure Ulcer Day, helping to generate more awareness on, you guessed it, pressure ulcers.Stop the Pressure Ulcer Day

A frequently occurring health problem, pressure ulcers are painful, costly and represent a reduced quality of life and are a major burden to their sufferers.

Research provided by NHS Midlands an East show that 80 to 90% of pressure ulcers are easily avoidable, proving how important quality health care and equipment is.

In the United Kingdom (UK) pressure ulcers cost up to 4% of the annual health care budget (or £750 million annually) with expenses estimated at £30,000 per individual pressure ulcer. When community health care costs are added to hospital costs, pressure ulcers consume up to £2.1 billion of the National Health Service (NHS) budget*.

Harvest Healthcare are proud to show their support to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Board and the research they carry out into pressure ulcers across the world.

It is important for sufferers to receive proper care and comfort to ease the pain and treat pressure ulcers. We have a range of active and static mattress, which provide the necessary support needed to relieve pressure as and when required.

Whilst Harvest Healthcare cannot provide advice and support on treating pressure ulcers, we have a dedicated team able to provide full details on our pressure relieving products.

For more information on our products, please contact us and help to Stop the Pressure.

Pets and Patients

Saturday 29th October is National Cat Day, a day to encourage cat lovers everywhere to celebrate the companionship they receive from their kitty kat. But why stop at cats?

Pets have been accepted in many households as another well-loved member of the family, a companion and for those who live alone, someone to come home too.

Research has shown for those living with Dementia, Alzheimer’s and other such mental illnesses, having a cat or a dog with them can help battle the feeling of loneliness, boredom and assist in keeping to a routine.

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) has a powerful calming effect on those individuals suffering, and have been introduced in many care homes throughout the country to help battle the negative behaviours associated with such illnesses. Some care homes allow patients to bring their own pets with them once they move into care, and can help support both the pet and the patient. The need for companionship becomes greater when getting older, especially when the patient is effected by an illness such as Dementia.

For those patients who find they need care at home, or have been moved into a care home, it is important for them to feel safe, secure and maintain their normal routine and way of life for as long as they can.

If you need more information on how you can better support a patient or loved one suffering from Dementia, please get in touch with Harvest Healthcare. We offer specialist services on profiling bed designs, as well as other important care requirements, which assist in making the patient feel safe, secure and like they are in the comfort of their own home.
